Energy Analysis and Measurement
1 January 2016Grounding Measurement
3 January 2016The rapid increase in electric vehicles has also led to a rise in the number of electric vehicle charging stations in various locations. Typically located in open areas or indoor parking lots, charging stations are highly susceptible to sudden surge and lightning strikes due to their grounding connections. Grid-sourced surges are also not uncommon. If a lightning strike occurs while the vehicle is charging, both the vehicle’s electrical system and the station can suffer serious damage. Therefore, EV charging stations must be protected against sudden surges.
Electric charging stations should be protected against surge and lightning strikes.
Especially in public institutions where charging stations are installed with significant investments, vehicles and stations must be protected using AG PARAFUDR systems. Combined type AG Parafudrs are recommended. While the location of the charging station is important for product selection, Yılkomer uses 100 kA compact series products for similar applications at charging points. Each cartridge provides 100 kA protection, and B+C class AG Parafudr systems must be selected according to the system’s continuous voltage level. Installation is as important as product selection, and the AG Parafudr system is installed by the expert team at Lightning Protection Center, ensuring protection for both vehicles and charging stations.
Charging stations can fail in series if a surge occurs.
Products with LED indicators are critical to determine whether the system is protected before charging the vehicle. If the indicator shows red, the system has experienced a surge and is unprotected. To avoid risking costly vehicles, always check whether AG Parafudr protection is present at charging points.
In response to multiple complaints, the Lightning Protection Center provides guidance for electric vehicle users and charging station operators. For product selection, recommendations, and installation support, you can reach Yılkomer’s expert engineering team.
