Telecommunication and DSL Protection

The Raycap RayTel and RayDat telecommunication protection family protects subscriber telephone and DSL lines against lightning, switching, and mains-induced overvoltages. With a high frequency range up to 250 MHz, it is suitable for all DSL lines; it supports ADSL, ADSL2, and ADSL2+ protocols over POTS and ISDN lines. Wall or DIN rail mounting versions are offered with screw, quick-connect, or RJ45 terminal options.

Data transmission is an integral part of daily life — therefore, providing adequate protection for this type of signal is crucial. Whether at the building entrance or for telephone connections within the home or office, these solutions should be considered part of the building's lightning protection system.

These SPDs protect subscriber telecommunication equipment against lightning strikes, switching operations, and surges from the telecommunication network.

Complete protection on the telecommunication side fully supports signal transmission of DSL technologies even in systems with excessively long cable routes. Within the operating frequency range, operational degradation and insertion loss are negligible. The protection module is adapted to the frequency characteristics of the subscriber's twisted pair cable — the same module can be used on ADSL, ADSL2, and ADSL2+ protocols, over both POTS and ISDN lines.

Product families:

RayTel 10 — Compact, telecommunication-side protection with RJ11 or RJ45 connection. Up to 175 V DC. Thyristor surge suppressor + GDT + thermo-clip structure. Frequency range up to 10 MHz. Can be connected directly to the telephone socket.

RayTel 20 — High-performance model for DSL networks. Bandwidth up to 250 MHz — highest in the family. 20 kA total discharge current and 7.5 kA total lightning impulse current (10/350 µs). Suitable for outdoor and building entrance installation with IP66 protection class and polypropylene housing.

RayDat SPH-2-230 / SPH-4-230 — For high-voltage lines up to 230 V DC. MOV + GDT structure, 5 A load current.

RayDat SLH-2-110 / SLH-4-110 — 110 V DC standard modular protection. Single pair (SLH-2) and two-pair (SLH-4) versions.

RayDat SUI-4-110 — High-capacity model for exposed lines. In 20 kA, Imax 30 kA — highest discharge values in the family.

RayDat SRH-2-110 — Version with remote signal contact. Contact changes position in case of fault; information is transmitted to the monitoring system.

RayDat SGH-3-110 — For systems requiring separated signal ground, especially RS 232.

Technical approach: Devices have a multi-stage structure — coarse protection is provided by a gas discharge tube (GDT), fine protection by a diode block (SAD). The series resistance (1.6–2.0 Ω) between them establishes energy coordination. The thermo-clip eliminates the risk of fire and shock by diverting current to ground in case of mains incursion between the power line and the communication line.

Products comply with IEC/EN 61643-21 standard. Classification: D1 / C1 / C2 / C3.
