Protection of Cranes Against Lightning
12 September 2015When current flows for various reasons into conductive parts in our facility where it should not be present, residual current occurs. A residual current device continuously compares the phase current with the neutral current; thus, the difference between the two, namely the residual current, flows to earth. Under normal conditions, there is always a small amount of residual current in installations due to insulation and losses. When the difference between phase and neutral reaches a predefined level, the residual current device disconnects the circuit. In this way, loss of life and property is prevented.
Residual current devices are generally included in the regulations of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. Article 18 of the Electrical Internal Installations Regulation stipulates the use of a residual current device (300 mA) for fire protection at main distribution points, and the installation of a residual current device (30 mA) for life protection at secondary distribution points together with a thermal magnetic circuit breaker or automatic fuse, ensuring selectivity among all protection devices. The considerations for the use of the device and how it should be used are addressed in the Regulation on Grounding in Electrical Installations.

Why Residual Current Device Measurement (Test)
Even if your facility has a residual current device, you need to know whether it will operate in case of any danger. Therefore, regular maintenance of residual current devices, which are very important for the protection of life and property, must be carried out. The testing process should be performed by taking measurements from all points monitored by the residual current devices. Electrical test instruments can be used for this purpose. At this point, both the tripping current and the tripping time of the residual current device should be checked, and if they do not comply with the standards, the device should be replaced.
