Use of Spark Gap Surge Arresters in Equipotential Bonding
18 December 2016Drives, frequently found in factories, airports, power plants, and similar facilities, ensure the operation of the fed device by bringing the required frequency to the desired level. Protecting these devices, which have sensitive electronic equipment and control circuits, against lightning and sudden surges is important in this regard.

The first element to consider in the protection of these devices is the correct selection of Uc, i.e., continuous operating voltage, in addition to cascaded LV surge protection. At this point, when making product selection, we recommend selecting surge arresters with more flexible Uc values. Especially in facilities where sensitive equipment is frequently found, products with low Up protection levels should be selected in main panels. Therefore, selecting a Type 1+2+3 product for your main panel will allow fine protection surge arresters to perform their duty more easily against incoming lightning impulses or sudden surge impulses.
Protection with LV Surge Arrester
As seen in the image above, a frequency converter is protected using LV surge arresters in parts 1, 2, and 3. Now let’s look at the product selection here.
1- Type 1 +2+3 100 kA PROTEC ASL 100/320 3P+N
LV surge arrester providing 3-phase lightning protection, sudden surge protection, and sensitive system protection has been selected.
