ESE Lightning Conductors

Franklin France ACTIVE 2D® — Dual-Triggered Active Lightning Conductor (ESE)

Early Streamer Emission (ESE) active lightning conductor with dual excitation device. It not only initiates the upward leader channel but also provides the energy required for its propagation. Powered by photovoltaic cells, 304L stainless steel body. Two models: Δt 30 / 60 µs. Remote testing capability from the ground without disassembly.

ACTIVE 2D® operates on a different principle than classic ESE lightning conductors: it not only initiates the upward leader channel but also provides the energy to sustain its propagation until it merges with the downward leader from the cloud.

It achieves this with two separate devices:

1. Impulse device — stores electrostatic energy present in the atmosphere. When a storm approaches, an integrated sensor measuring the surrounding electric field triggers this device. The polarity of the head is almost instantly reversed, and the electric field in the tip region suddenly strengthens. This is how common ESE systems operate up to this point.

2. Power device — this is the source of innovation. It collects energy and stores it in power capacitors. This allows ACTIVE 2D® to be continuously pre-charged.

When the downward leader enters the protection zone of the lightning conductor, the measured current rapidly increases. As soon as the current exceeds the characteristic threshold, the power capacitors discharge, releasing the energy required for the propagation of the leader channel.

In this setup, the lightning conductor head is used as a capturing element and is therefore electrically isolated from the ground.

The energy source consists of photovoltaic cells — independent and clean. The radius of curvature of the head has been optimized to reduce the corona effect and ensure the operation of the excitation device.

The body is made of 304L stainless steel, providing high corrosion resistance.

The product complies with the NF C 17-102 (September 2011) standard and has undergone high-voltage tests at the Bazet laboratory in France — a completely independent, COFRAC accredited laboratory.
