17 May 2020The most important issue in lightning protection design is to correctly determine the risk and manage the design based on this risk value. Risk management is actually the first and most important step of protection. Just as the risk of every facility cannot be the same, the risks of different structures within a facility also differ from each other. Lightning risk analysis is generally carried out using programs specifically designed for this purpose. The most commonly used program is the Risk Analysis program of the IEC 62305 standard. However, in order to reach a more accurate result, we need to know what this risk analysis program infrastructure covers. Many coefficients come together to reveal the lightning risk. One of the most common mistakes made in our country is confusing active lightning rod risk analysis with passive system risk analysis programs, or using lightning rod risk programs in rolling sphere or protection angle method applications. The IEC 62305 standard provides us with the most accurate analyses in this regard. We need to evaluate, using the risk analysis program, where lightning is likely to strike, with what intensity and frequency it may strike, and what kind of negative consequences it may cause when it strikes, by adding our interpretations.
