Data and Signal Line Surge Protection

Power and Signal Line Protection (RayDat SUH-2 PS)

Raycap RayDat SUH-2 PS is a modular SPD developed for systems where mounting space is limited, but both signal and power lines need protection. It protects 24 V power and 24 V signal lines in a single module. It is designed for systems that carry power and data together, such as CAN bus and DeviceNet. Key features include a 30 MHz operating frequency, 20 kA discharge capacity, and active connection lines during module replacement.

In some systems, both power and signal lines require protection at a single point, but panel space for two separate modules is often unavailable. The RayDat SUH-2 PS was developed for this need: it protects both 24 V power and 24 V data lines within a single 12 mm module.

This series is specifically designed for systems with one power supply and one signal line — such as CAN bus, DeviceNet, and similar. The device protects lines against both lightning-induced overvoltages and electrostatic discharges from switching transients within the building.

A critical aspect of the design is that the signal line circuit is configured to minimize inter-capacitance and shunt capacitance. This increases the operating frequency to up to 30 MHz — meaning the addition of protection does not reduce communication speed.

The two lines are handled with different protection topologies:

  • Data line: GDT (coarse) + diode block (fine) + series resistor (1.6–2.0 Ω) + thermo-clip. Response time < 1 ns, residual voltage < 70 V, cutoff frequency 30 MHz.
  • Power line: MOV + bidirectional TVS diode + inductance (15 µH) + thermal disconnector (TD). 3 A load current, very low series resistance (< 0.2 Ω), residual voltage < 100 V.

The power line operates at 24 V AC / 30 V DC nominal voltage (Uc: 28 V AC / 40 V DC), the data line is 24 V DC (Uc: 28 V).

Connection lines remain active when the module is removed from the base — module replacement does not stop the system. The device is equipped with screw terminals, is 35 mm DIN rail mounted, and is only 12 mm wide.

The product complies with IEC/EN 61643-21 standard. Classification: D1 / C1 / C2 / C3.
