In AC Surge Arrester systems, the focus is generally on protection against lightning strikes, and product selections are made accordingly. However, did you know that 70% of device damage is caused by grid surges and sudden overvoltage fluctuations? Internal overvoltages account for 57% of device board failures within facilities. Again, in the Chamber of Chemical Engineers’ 2020 industrial fire report, we see that 67% of fires were caused by electrical sparks, and sudden peaks appear as the most important cause of sparks.


Type 2 Low Voltage surge arrester systems are surge types that occur within 25 nanoseconds and can reach up to maximum values of 40 kiloamperes, such as grid peaks, switching surges, switching impulses, harmonics, and internal overvoltage fluctuations; they are not as powerful as lightning but occur very frequently and are present in every building. These surges are very common especially in organized industrial zones and cause significant damage in production areas with drive systems.

Type 2 AC Surge Arrester products are mounted in parallel to the system; in parallel installation, you do not provide input and output through the surge arrester. Phase, earth, and neutral lines must be installed with cables of at least 6 mm2 cross-section, and cable lengths must not exceed 50 cm.
