Why Should Only Type 1 (Class B) Surge Arresters Not Be Used in Main Switchboards?
9 July 2017Wind turbines and solar power plants host many sensitive electronic devices. Communication lines, sensors, monitoring systems, camera systems, and many other systems must be protected against sudden overvoltages. What we have seen especially from our field experience is that the protection of these sensitive systems with Type 3 LV surge arresters is not performed, and main panel or sub-panel protection is considered sufficient. However, if we cannot reduce the Up protection level to the desired level, our sensitive systems will burn out.
The RayDat SUI-4 Series provides the same electrical performance as the SLH-4 Series but features a 10 kA Iimp lightning impulse protection level per line and has higher surge resistance or impulse resistance. Raydat SUI is intended for operation in electrical environments where higher exposure to direct or partially direct lightning currents is experienced. These are wind turbines and PV plants where lightning exposure is more severe.
Protection Technology | 10 kA Lightning Impulse Protection
The initial protection stage consists of a three-pole gas discharge tube and is designed to divert the primary surge energy. The subsequent protection stage is realized using fast bidirectional silicon diodes. Thus, the diodes are prevented from burning out due to the incoming lightning impulse. The impulse first passes through these tubes and is slowed down. Special design techniques have been used in the design of the protection stage. With this special design, while products in other brands can provide maximum 5 kA protection, RayDat SUI-4 provides protection up to 10 kA lightning impulses.
