As an alternative technology in Lightning Protection Systems, TVSS is an industry term used for “Transient Voltage Surge Suppressor.” This term is still in use; however, it is also officially referred to as “Surge Protection Device” or (SPD). TVSS devices are designed to cut off excess voltage in the event of an instantaneous rise or fluctuations that may occur on the power line. The installation of TVSS (SPD) is very important for protecting sensitive equipment that may be damaged due to electrical fluctuations on AC lines; and if such a problem occurs, they eliminate the surge at the nanosecond level and protect systems. TVSS devices (SPDs) are the most popular surge suppression equipment used today.

Now, let us eliminate some question marks regarding TVSS devices. First and most importantly, TVSS devices are not energy-saving equipment, although their sales have increased in recent years. This is probably due to increased interest in green technology and the desire to conserve energy; however, this is a completely incorrect perception. TVSS devices are not energy-saving devices. TVSS systems only protect circuits by preventing sudden surges from damaging the system.

TVSS is a protection mechanism that prevents power system transients, commonly known by the public as power fluctuations or power surges. It provides protection against impulses that can cause surges above 50,000 V. Since conventional TVSS systems consist of sensitive components, they do not provide extremely strong protection against lightning. Continuous switching on and off of industrial equipment weakens circuits over time and causes system failures; when lightning strikes, it can burn all machine boards within 100 ns.
