PROTECTION OF GOLF COURSES AGAINST LIGHTNING

Due to their open-area locations, golf courses are highly exposed to the direct effects of lightning. In addition to the possibility of damage to the golf facility’s social buildings and electrical systems, there are also life-threatening risks for golfers, especially due to step voltage. Because of soil resistivity, a lightning strike occurring near the golf course or on a tree close to the golf course may cause electric shock to people playing golf due to differences in resistivity. Within the scope of IEC 62305 standards, protection zones must be established on golf courses using passive systems; precautions must be taken against step voltage, and all energy and communication infrastructure must be protected with low-voltage surge arrester systems.
