Motorized curtain and blind systems are increasingly prevalent in commercial and residential buildings. In addition to enhancing living comfort, they offer a low-profile security solution by being programmable to open and close at random intervals throughout the day. When integrated with timers and light sensors, they can automatically open at sunrise and close at sunset.

Like everything else in a smart building, these sensitive electronics and motors must be protected against overvoltage. Moreover, maintaining or repairing these systems is not always easy—in some cases, it requires working meters above the ground. A motor failure means not only the cost of the part but also significant access and labor expenses.

The product's most notable design decision concerns safety. Centrally controlled automatic blinds feature a safety function that retracts them in strong winds. The ProTec BLD T2 is designed to allow emergency retraction of the blinds even in the event of a fault. This means that even if the surge arrester reaches its end-of-life, the blind can still retract during a wind alarm—the protection device does not impede the safety function of the system it protects.

The device protects the motor in both directions (blind up and blind down). Thanks to industry-standard STAK3/STAS3 connectors, installation is quick and easy. It provides an audible alarm in case of a fault; with an IP54 protection rating, it is weather-resistant.
