Points to Consider in Grounding Measurement

Regular grounding measurement is of great importance not only for the lightning protection system but also for establishing the safety of life and property. Performing Grounding measurement periodically is one of the most important elements ensuring our safety in our buildings and industrial enterprises. Failure to perform periodic measurements will cause many negative situations such as people getting shocked as a result of a possible leakage, fault currents causing fire, damage to devices as a result of equipotential differences, late detection of voltages between neutral and ground, and the inability to discharge lightning impulses causing fire. Therefore, periodic grounding measurements, which are also mandatory by our regulations, must be performed regularly by professional companies.

In grounding measurement works, whether human life is protected or not is actually the most important point we need to pay attention to. Reporting and interpreting grounding measurement works, which constitute the most important pillar of electrical control works, is of great importance. For example, the protection grounding value of a point came out as 1.2 ohms. It is not correct to say directly that it is suitable or unsuitable for this value. It should be checked whether this value is suitable in terms of human and fire protection elements. Unfortunately, a value of 0.5 ohms can be written directly as suitable, but if there is no residual current relay or it is not working, or if thermal-magnetic switches are not suitable, this value is not suitable. The first priority in grounding is its suitability for human safety.

Coming to the points to be considered in grounding measurement, we can start by not relying too much on stake measurements. In stake measurement works, we determine the reference ourselves, and somehow we can directly intervene in the result. Therefore, for objectivity, it is extremely important to measure according to the Loop Impedance method with digital measuring devices. Here, it is important that we do not determine the reference point and go outside the ring area in stake measurement.

Another important point is that the settings and calibration of the measuring device have been done regularly. We cannot make an accurate measurement with a device whose calibration date has expired. Having trained and experienced personnel is also extremely important for measurement. If possible, the measurement should be done personally by the engineers who will report and sign it.

As Yılkomer, we can perform your grounding measurements with our calibrated state-of-the-art devices and trained team and offer you a technical evaluation.
