23 January 2018The grounding system is the process of connecting non-active parts, neutral conductors, and parts connected to them to the grounding conductor with the help of electrodes and other grounding equipment in electrical installations. The grounding system, which is of great importance for human life, the life of devices, and the operation of protection elements, must be measured and reported periodically every year.
Obtaining the grounding measurement report periodically every year prevents possible electrical shocks and device damages, and ensures the life safety of facility employees. It is also extremely important for the officials and engineers responsible for the operation of the facility to fulfill their legal obligations. In the Official Gazette published on April 28, 2014, the obligation to measure electrical installation, grounding installation, and lightning rod installation periodically once a year was introduced. And it has been made mandatory that these measurements be made with fully calibrated devices by expert companies and engineers.

Having periodic electrical installation control work, grounding measurement, internal installation inspection report, and Lightning Rod Measurements done and examining their reports in detail allows us to prevent many negative situations, especially fire risk, in advance. However, the most important point in this regard is the preparation and interpretation of grounding measurement reports by expert companies. Whether the protection elements work correctly or not is the most important issue to be interpreted according to the result. In fact, with the periodic work we do, we do not just look at the values; we also perform residual current relay control, thermal magnetic circuit breaker control, and LV Surge Arrester system control. For example, a company came and made your measurements and the grounding measurement value came out as 0.82 ohms; it is not appropriate to write “below 1 ohm is suitable” in the report immediately; the values here are symbolic for us. The purpose of the Grounding measurement report is whether the protection elements work at this resulting value.
On the other hand, lightning protection system control and interpretation of lightning rod grounding measurement report results are also important. Within the scope of the IEC 62305 standard, the concept of the equipotential system is extremely important because the point where the resistance is low is always at risk. Here, it is likely that every lightning impulse hitting the lightning rod will flow into the system. Therefore, after separate measurements are made, it should be checked whether the systems are brought to equipotential. In addition, in the lightning rod installation control, installation control should be done together with the periodic lightning protection measurement value, and many details such as whether S separation distances are provided, corrosion status in the installation, and turning points should be paid attention to.
The technical competence of the equipment used is also extremely important. First of all, measurement with stakes is now a thing of the past; there are professional devices that perform stakeless measurement within the scope of technological developments. Measurement results where we take the reference ourselves can mislead us; therefore, we should perform measurements according to LOOP IMPEDANCE measurement, if possible, with smart devices that do not depend on us. Here, the calibration of the device, the measurement result control chart, and the experience of the person measuring are extremely important.
Grounding facility measurement, electrical installation control and measurement, lightning rod installation control and measurement should be done by expert and authorized companies if possible. Although reports received from companies authorized by EMO (Chamber of Electrical Engineers) and TURKAK are reliable, it is very important to interpret the results and offer solution proposals for correction.
