4 November 2018How Do We Protect Cameras Against Lightning?
3 December 2018Tripod systems, which enable us to make correct designs within the scope of IEC 62305 standards in lightning protection, offer us the most accurate protection method with their ability to activate when lightning is about to strike, to capture the impulse in an insulated manner away from the facility, and to safely discharge it into the ground. For tripod systems, where application is just as important as design, in order to provide correct protection for many years, we must comply with standards and manufacturer instructions both during the product selection phase and the application phase. Tripod systems are integrated with insulated conductors. Insulated systems should generally be preferred in rooftop building projects.
Primarily, we need to select the most suitable product used in our design calculations.

In building projects, if the tripod application is not suitable, we can also use insulated air terminals that can be side-mounted in our systems.

In lightning protection, product selection and design diversity enable us to manage this work in the most correct way. Considering that aesthetic concerns are also important in lightning protection systems from an architectural perspective, we must never forget that this is an engineering and design task. The air terminal family consists of tripod, insulated tripod, and only insulated air terminal options.

As Yılkomer, we use the most accurate lightning protection products with all certifications completed in our designs, under the ELKO-BİS brand for which we carry national responsibility.
The application criteria mentioned in our article are just as important as the tripod system design.

A tripod system consists of multiple connection components. These connection components must be used with all original equipment. Especially since the risk of arcing and sparking from lightning has the potential to cause fire, we must be careful to use the correct connection components.

Region A represents the stainless steel main body. These regions are connected to each other with special spot welding guns indicated with G.
Region B refers to concrete blocks weighing 40 kg. These blocks may vary depending on wind conditions and the size of the air terminal.
Region C indicates special connection components that show both the connections between the tripod leg and the blocks and the connection point of the lightning protection system if a bare conductor is to be used.
Region D represents the Tripod Leg system.
Region E represents the stainless steel air terminal with lightning impulse test capability that will receive the lightning strike.
Region F represents the main connection bolts that keep the entire system standing.
Region G represents the special spot system that provides advantages in all connections.

Installation of the insulated air terminal system against high lightning discharge is at least as important as the installation of the tripod system. Here, especially the installation details of the insulated conductor require attention to eliminate all risks.

In this system, we must pay attention to the installation of the insulated conductor at the connection between the insulated conductor and the air terminal. If we summarize the step-by-step preparation of the insulated conductor;
1- First, the insulated conductor must be placed inside the insulated air terminal. And the special head must be attached. A special cable stripping machine must be used to strip the cable. And the connector must be attached in a way that completely encloses the conductor.

After the conductor heads are attached, the base where the air terminal will be placed must be integrated at this point.

And the air terminal must be mounted so that it completely fits onto the insulated conductor.

When the air terminal and insulated system are prepared, the system is ready to receive lightning strikes!

As a lightning protection center, we strive to use the safest systems in our designs and to protect factories and facilities in the safest way against lightning by basing our applications on the IEC 62305 standard.
