The 6th Yılkomer Lightning Protection Seminar Was Held with Great Participation
1 April 2023Insulated lightning air terminals are special external lightning protection systems that capture the lightning strike in a controlled manner and prevent contact between the structure and the strike. As lightning risk in our country increases day by day, the use of correct protection methods is also increasing nationwide due to negative experiences encountered. In insulated lightning protection systems, in accordance with the IEC 62305 standard, they stand out as the safest solution for all external lightning protection designs, especially for conductive surfaces, flammable and explosive facilities, and surfaces that are risky in terms of touch.
Insulated air terminal systems consist of a 200kA insulated lightning down conductor and special mounting components. Insulated air terminals are mounted with structure-specific clamps; the 200kA insulated special down conductor passes through the air terminal and is connected to its top. The fiberglass jump of insulated air terminals allows the strike to flow from the outer surface to the inner surface, and the insulated lightning down conductor connected inside enables the safe discharge of the strike.

As Yılkomer, we use Gromtor branded insulated air terminal systems. In systems generally designed according to the protection angle method, air terminal lengths start from 3 meters and can reach up to 8 meters. It is not possible to achieve the rolling sphere method and isolate the strike with shorter air terminals. Commonly used non-insulated air terminals with lengths of 60 cm and 80 cm cannot achieve the correct penetration value in rolling sphere method designs. Therefore, using insulated air terminals with a minimum length of 3 meters in designs is the correct approach.
Gromtor insulated air terminal and down conductor systems are ex-proof and the air terminals are tested for 100kA strikes in accordance with the IEC 62305 standard.

As the Lightning Protection Center, we protect your facility in accordance with IEC 62305 standards with our insulated lightning protection systems. For correct protection, we carry out the risk analysis study required at the initial stage using IEC-compliant programs and ensure air terminal placement and design. Gromtor insulated lightning protection systems have all certifications such as lightning withstand tests, wind resistance tests, and temperature hot-cold tests.
Serious damage can occur when the inductions caused by conventional non-insulated systems induce electrical systems. Especially the absence of a Type 1+2 SPD system in all floor distribution boards increases the risk in non-insulated projects.
As Yılkomer, we recommend insulated air terminal and down conductor systems for your projects.
