Types of Surge Protectors
17 January 2016Grounding Measurement, grounding is extremely important for both life and property safety, from the smallest facility to the largest installation. In Lightning Protection Systems, the earth transition resistance value is critical, and it is also essential for the proper operation of the residual current device in the electrical panel. For this reason, we must keep grounding measurements under continuous control within the facility. There are many types of grounding systems in our facility, such as operational grounding, protective grounding, functional grounding, and lightning protection grounding. However, the equipotential system we always emphasize is the most important. In other words, there must be an equipotential grounding point in the facility where all grounding systems are bonded together.
Using this point as a reference, measurements can be taken at many locations within the facility, and we prefer the resistance difference not to exceed 0.2 ohms. Of course, this equipotential grounding value is our base reference; however, within the facility, basic values such as lightning protection grounding resistance below 10 ohms and operational grounding around 1 ohm are also applied. Our inspections focus on the equipotential concept to protect both devices and people. Therefore, instead of measuring from a single point, we measure all grounding systems throughout the facility. In addition, every socket and end point must have a grounding connection. For this reason, all grounding systems must be checked as part of electrical installation inspections. Grounding resistance value is also important in terms of step and touch voltage concepts. If we do not want to be electrocuted in simple terms and want to prevent damage to our equipment, grounding resistance values must be measured and, most importantly, regular installation inspections must be carried out.

If we do not want to be electrocuted and want to prevent equipment damage, grounding resistance values must be measured regularly.
Grounding resistance values cannot be measured with every device, and not every method provides accurate results. Device calibrations must be performed regularly every 6 months, and equipment must be inspected periodically. As known, there are many grounding measurement methods. As the Lightning Protection Center, we apply the LOOP IMPEDANCE measurement method and continue our R&D activities in this direction. The most fundamental step in grounding measurement is conducting a preliminary survey to determine measurement points. Then, equipotential and grounding measurements are carried out, followed by solution recommendations as part of our system analysis process.

Grounding measurement provides valuable results, especially when addressing specific issues related to functional grounding. The concept of functional grounding is also included in overvoltage and lightning protection. Especially in LV Surge Protection Devices, panel measurements and grounding types help determine the correct product selection. To prevent damage to devices and systems, grounding and equipotential bonding must be used in parallel with LV SPDs in panels. Grounding types such as TT, TNS, TNC, and TNC-S, along with resistance values, are critical for correct product selection.
As the Lightning Protection Center, we provide grounding measurement services throughout Türkiye via our licensed engineers and expert technical team using state-of-the-art equipment. We also conduct site surveys regarding overvoltage and lightning protection at measured locations. Grounding is the most fundamental electrical principle required from the most sensitive PLC devices to industrial motors. We recommend all stakeholders give due importance to grounding measurements and perform them regularly as part of occupational safety practices.
