Top 20 Facilities and Structures Where Lightning Protection Systems Must Be Installed as a Priority
4 April 2021Protect your operation and take precautions against system damage!
In order to ensure public safety and provide protection against electric shock on railway, tramway and metro lines, we would like to introduce you to the Raycap TVL, RVL and RPH Series.
Raycap Voltage Limiting Devices (VLD) protect personnel and passengers against dangerous touch voltages that occur in railway networks. They are resistant to repetitive short-circuit currents and ensure the effective elimination of fault conditions.
With Raycap Surge Protection products and rail system solutions, we can safely protect the entire electrical infrastructure—primarily AC and DC power lines, communication systems, and SCADA systems—against lightning, grid surges, harmonics, sudden voltage rises and switching surges. Especially the damages caused by lightning strikes occurring at intermediate stations pose very serious risks, as they affect train communication and signaling systems. Therefore, low-voltage surge arrester systems must be carefully selected for rail systems.

RHP-SCD Voltage Limiting Device
When an unauthorized touch voltage develops, the RHP-SCD system efficiently short-circuits the negative rail and ground, pulling it down to low safe values.
- Prevents leakage currents
- Protects the entire system against overvoltage and lightning surges
- Eliminates dangerous voltages at the nanosecond level
- Can be remotely monitored.

RVL Voltage Limiting Device
In the event of an overvoltage rise, the RVL series reduces dangerous voltage to very low safe levels. Additionally, in fault conditions and possible short circuits, it creates a safe zone between overloaded areas and transformers. The increased high current loads detected at the transformer station ensure the safe tripping of protective circuit breakers. It is used in rail systems.
- Responds very quickly.
- Features Strikesorb technology.
- Has a wide operating temperature range.
- Provides bidirectional protection.

In addition, in railway systems, insulated lightning protection systems and external lightning protection measures must be taken against the possibility of a direct lightning strike in station areas. A lightning strike that may occur in an environment with hundreds of people can cause very serious damage; therefore, stations must be protected against both step voltage and touch voltage. In intermediate stations used for technical purposes without human presence, both external lightning protection and low-voltage surge arrester measures must also be taken. A direct lightning strike means fire and can cause very serious damage.
In addition, it is common for card-based systems located alongside the rails and providing communication to be continuously damaged by lightning strikes. These cards create a serious economic burden for our country. What needs to be done at this point is to protect these cards against lightning with the correct protection products.
As Yılkomer, with the protection measures we apply for rail systems, we demonstrate that sustainable system operation is not impossible. For detailed information about site surveys and products, you can contact us at info@yilkomer.com.
