Surge Arrester Installation
27 May 2015Solar systems installed in open fields and on rooftops can be exposed at any time to sudden overvoltage impulses, primarily lightning strikes. This situation constitutes a complete disaster for solar investments that aim to ensure sustainable energy production over many years. Because lightning and sudden overvoltage fluctuations can strike the same point repeatedly, and in every case, energy production will be disrupted, often requiring the renewal of the entire system. To prevent this situation, DC energy line protections must definitely be used at the facility, especially at combiner box points, within the scope of IEC 62305 Standards.
The DC surge arresters to be used must be long-lasting and continuously operational, which is of great importance. Because a surge arrester that becomes inoperative after the first impulse requires constant monitoring, VG technology surge arresters should be used in systems in parallel with semiconductor technology. The characteristics of the products used must be suitable for protection against both lightning and grid impulses. When cost is taken into consideration, products tested on the earth-neutral line with a 10/350 ms waveform and on other phases with an 8/20 ms waveform still provide effective protection in our facilities.
Type 1+2 PV Surge Protector

In the selection of DC low voltage surge arrester systems, the continuous voltage of the facility, grounding type, risk analysis of the region where the product is used, and lightning statistics are very important. Therefore, within the scope of project data, calculations must be made and the right product must be used at the right point.
