Protection of HMI Panels Against Overvoltages

26 October 2017When we look at the terrain or roof conditions where solar power plants are installed, we usually see that installations take place in the first zone with the highest risk level. On the other hand, internal overvoltages that may occur within the plant are another important threat. Therefore, solar power plants must be protected against both lightning impulses and internal overvoltages. The most important part of effective protection is ensuring the 4-way protection: internal lightning protection, external lightning protection, equipotential bonding, and grounding.

On the other hand, another frequently forgotten important element is the inverter and communication lines in solar power plants. These systems are both the heart of our plant and are very sensitive to sudden overvoltages due to their electronic structure.
Generally, we see that the lines going to inverter systems are Cat 6. At this point, placing a Cat 6 Type 3 surge arrester on the Communication system will protect us against impulses coming from these lines. Again, our automation and SCADA systems must be protected with Type 3 surge arresters. Our recommendation to you at this point is sensitive energy protection products. These surge arresters, whose Up level is quite low, reduce the incoming impulses to the desired level so that your system does not burn out.
