Points to Consider Regarding CCTV Camera Protection
Camera or CCTV systems are highly sensitive to lightning and surge impulses due to their delicate electronic structures. In addition, the integrated structures of CCTV systems such as DVRs and monitors can also be damaged by these impulses. So, what should we pay attention to when protecting these systems against lightning and surge impulses?
Considering the cost, CCTV systems can be protected against lightning and surge with low budgets.
The presence of an external lightning protection system in your facility does not mean that your CCTV or cameras are protected. External lightning protection systems only protect against the physical effects of lightning.
Since CCTV systems are highly sensitive, they can only be fully protected with a cascaded protection system. This means that protection should be applied with Class B+C in main panels, Class C in sub-panels, and finally Class D products in front of the cameras.
First of all, the panel supplying power to the camera must be protected. At this point, a B+C surge arrester with a minimum capacity of 50 kA will be sufficient.
Then, depending on the type of camera, a Class D surge arrester providing sensitive protection should be installed in front of the camera.
Grounding and equipotential bonding are indispensable for protection against lightning and surge and are also essential here. A good grounding and equipotential system will provide more reliable protection.
