6 Features That a Surge Arrester Must Have
18 October 2015IEC 62305 is an international standard providing system designs and engineering calculations for the protection of buildings and facilities against Lightning and Transient Overvoltages. In our country, it has been adopted as TSE EN 62305. The standard consists of four parts and details protection measures according to facility characteristics against lightning effects. Recent inspections by the Ministry of Labor on occupational safety and process compliance have imposed significant penalties on facilities that are not installed according to this standard, and fines have been applied if compliance is not observed within the specified period. This is particularly important in flammable and explosive facilities, or locations where tank protection is critical.
Although lightning protection systems in our country are often reduced to just lightning rods, IEC 62305 prescribes that systems should be designed according to the rolling sphere method, and facilities should be protected based on risk analysis. As we always emphasize, lightning protection is not limited to external lightning systems. According to the IEC 62305 standard for lightning protection of buildings and facilities, LV surge arresters (AG Parafudr) and internal lightning protection systems should also be integrated into facilities.

At this point, product selection should again be based on an on-site survey according to standards. IEC 62305 provides protection against electrical and physical effects of lightning. Designs may include 12-meter lightning rods with insulated conductors or insulated capture points calculated with S-protection distance to cover the facility protection angle. The most critical aspect in all cases is ensuring equipotential bonding. Our blog contains many articles about AG Surge Arresters, emphasizing the importance of product selection and proper application according to system and facility characteristics.

At Lightning Protection Center, we implement all systems in accordance with IEC 62305. Site surveys and system design are carried out by our team, followed by the installation of selected products. Project planning and technical calculations are performed by us, and necessary reports are delivered to the facility after implementation.
