26 September 2015AG Surge Arresters According to Protection Zones
AG surge arresters are classified according to lightning protection zones. Selection of AG surge arresters depends on these criteria. In this article, installation types according to grounding systems are also shown. Selection requires detailed analysis, combining system characteristics with risk factors.
LPZ 0A: Unprotected area outside structures that will be directly exposed to lightning strikes.
LPZ 0B: Unprotected area at the interface of structure and external effects, directly impacted by lightning.
LPZ 1: Area where the electrical line first enters the building or installation. Primary area exposed to electromagnetic and direct effects.
LPZ 2,…, n: Area containing sensitive equipment that may be affected by the electromagnetic effects of lightning and follow currents.
Distribution of Internal Lightning Protection Systems by Protection Zones
- Type 1 (EN 61643-11 (2011/03))
Class I (IEC 61643-1)
LPZ 0: Shows the area it will protect.
Class B is referred to as a Lightning Protection Device.
- Type 2 (EN 61643-11 (2011/03))
Class II (IEC 61643-1)
LPZ 1: Shows the area it will protect.
Class C protects against switching and secondary surges.
- Type 3 (EN 61643-11 (2011/03))
Class III (IEC 61643-1)
LPZ 2: Shows the area it will protect.
Class D protects against switching and secondary surges.
Depending on usage and panel distances, there are also combinations like Type 1+2, Type 1+2+3, Type 2+3.
Outside protection zones, factors such as Imax significantly affect AG surge arrester selection. For example, B-class products may have 100 kA, 50 kA, 25 kA ratings. Correct product selection with optimum cost requires risk analysis, site survey, and lightning characteristics of the area. Another criterion is the grounding system type. Below, you can see internal lightning protection connections according to grounding types.
