LV Surge Protector Selection Criteria
12 April 2020Put an end to the problem of residual current tripping!
Due to residual currents not holding and tripping without reason, residual current protection relays have been disabled in many facilities. Especially in industrial plants, although they are mandatory, the unnecessary tripping of residual current devices causes serious hesitation in their application. In fact, the root cause of all these problems is the incorrect selection of the residual current relay. For this reason, the F-type residual current relays of Gewiss, for which we are the Turkey representative, eliminate all of these problems.
YILKOMER IS THE SOLE AUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTOR OF ITALIAN GEWISS BRAND F, A AND B TYPE RESIDUAL CURRENT RELAY PRODUCTS!
As Yılkomer, we carry out the Turkey responsibility for the A, B and F type residual current relays of the Italian company Gewiss. Gewiss residual current relay products make a difference with their technologies. In this article, as Yılkomer, we will explain the importance and application areas of F TYPE RESIDUAL CURRENT RELAYS.
Protection against composite-frequency residual fault currents caused by the operation of motors and drives in industrial facilities can be provided with F-type relays tested according to EN 61008 and EN 61543 standards. Harmonics and high frequencies cause standard residual current relays to trip unnecessarily. Thanks to their filter-like characteristics, F-type residual current relays are not affected by these frequencies and harmonics.
Residual currents formed by mixed frequencies originating from motors, inverters and drives cannot be detected by A-type relays. For this reason, by using F-type relays, correct and trouble-free protection measures can be implemented.

In our lightning protection system projects, which constitute our main field of activity, our customers complain that residual current relays trip during thunderstorms and that all food in refrigerators spoils, especially when they are not at home. This is because A-type relays are not resistant to sudden overvoltage fluctuations. Sudden voltage rises, spikes and switching surges originating from lightning and the power grid cause residual current relays to trip, especially in panels without surge protective devices. Gewiss F-type residual current relays prevent this problem. They do not protect the system against overvoltage surges, but they do prevent unnecessary tripping. Protection against sudden overvoltage surges is provided by LV surge protective devices. However, F-type residual current relays must be used to prevent nuisance tripping.
Main facilities where the use of F-type residual current relays is mandatory;
Factories, facilities with harmonic-generating devices, drive-based systems, welding machines, CNC machines, villas, elevator panels, automatic door systems, escalators, shopping malls, textile factories, rail systems.
With the support of its international partners, the expert engineering staff of the Lightning Protection Center supports customers experiencing problems with residual current relays by providing solution-oriented approaches based on its success in Lightning Protection Systems.
