Common Misconceptions in Overvoltage and Lightning Protection Systems
7 March 2016CCTV or cameras should be protected against lightning and surge voltages, as these devices are highly sensitive, and we at Yılkomer strongly recommend it. We frequently observe systems that cost thousands of Turkish Lira being completely destroyed or disabled due to a lightning strike.
To protect camera systems from lightning and surge voltages, the type of camera must first be identified. The protection requirements differ depending on whether it is an IP camera or an analog camera.
Analog Camera Protection
1- Power Supply Protection | Class C SPD
2- Video Signal Protection | Class D SPD BNC Protection 12 V
3- Control Cable Protection | Class D SPD Data Line Protection
IP Camera Protection
4- IP Protection | Class D SPD Cat 5, 6, or POE Protection
As you can see, protecting cameras against lightning and surges requires a **coordinated multi-stage protection**. Sensitive devices can be protected using products selected according to the appropriate Up protection level. Accordingly, in main panels use B+C class, in secondary panels use Class C, and finally, in front of the device, a Class D SPD should be installed according to the system specifications.
