Lightning Protection and Grounding of Rail Systems

Grounding Handbook
19 February 2016In our country, an excessive amount of copper conductors and equipment is used in both grounding and lightning protection systems. These products, which require a significant economic investment, create a serious burden both for investors and for the national economy. However, in terms of both standards and engineering calculations, it is not mandatory to use copper in every system. Unfortunately, in our country, specifications and projects continue exactly as they were initially prepared; developments in material technology, solutions that reduce costs while increasing quality, are not sufficiently followed.
IS IT MANDATORY TO USE COPPER IN LIGHTNING PROTECTION INSTALLATIONS?
We wanted to present the following table included in the IEC 62305 standard to our readers. The use of COPPER in lightning protection and grounding installations is not mandatory. By performing correct engineering calculations and using products compliant with the IEC 50164 standard, Aluminum, Galvanized, and Alloy conductors can also be used in installations.
You may contact us for technical calculations, questions, and application support regarding this subject.
