Class B Surge Arrester (Type 1)
Class B surge arresters provide protection according to the 10/350 μs curve, i.e., protection against lightning strikes. They are also called Type 1 or Class 1. Use of Class B surge arresters is mandatory in facilities with external lightning protection.
Class C Surge Arrester (Type 2)
Class C surge arresters provide protection according to the 8/20 μs curve, i.e., protection against internal overvoltages. They are called Type 2 or Class 2 surge arresters. 65% of overvoltage-related damages are caused by internal overvoltages. Therefore, Class C surge arresters should be used in coordination with Class B surge arresters in every facility.
Class D Surge Arrester (Type 3)
Class D surge arresters are used for the protection of sensitive devices. With the increasing number of electronic devices, the Up protection level has decreased. To reduce this Up level to the desired value, Class D surge arresters are used.
