Protection of Solar Panels Against Lightning Using Insulated or Angled Air Terminals Installed Behind the Panels

We previously explained in our blog posts that within the scope of the IEC 62305 Standard, solar panels must be protected according to the rolling sphere method, and that lightning rod systems pose a risk in open-field applications. Using the rolling sphere method, we have protected many systems with 8000 mm long air termination rods.

However, the use of a Photovoltaic Surge Arrester is extremely important in all systems.

Alternatively, solar panels can also be protected using angled air termination rods installed behind the panels and insulated air termination rods. The most important issue here is the correct design of the protection angles. You can review the detailed information in the attached documents. For both photovoltaic external lightning protection and photovoltaic internal lightning protection systems, as well as cost calculations, you may request support from the expert engineering team of the Lightning Protection Center.
