Within the scope of the IEC 62305 Standard, the lightning down conductor must either be routed with the ‘s’ separation distance or be carried to the ground in an insulated manner. Here, the concept of an Insulated Lightning Down Conductor does not refer to just any insulated cable. A lightning impulse is a special impulse that can reach peak values of 200 kA and temperatures of 28,000 degrees Celsius. In order to insulate a lightning impulse, cables that have passed special tests in this field must be used. Insulated lightning down conductors, which prevent devices from being magnetically affected and damaged, must be selected correctly, and major damages must be prevented by using the right product. The most important detail here is that the insulated conductor must have been tested against a real-characteristic lightning impulse on the 10/350ms curve in an international laboratory. Our product has many test certificates in this regard. The test standard for insulated conductors against lightning impulse is PN-EN 62561-1:2012 / EN 62561-1:2012. Be sure to ask for the test certificate of the product in this regard.

Gromtor has a test value of 100 kA on the 10/350ms Iimp curve and can be safely used on conductive surfaces. The Gromtor insulated lightning down conductor, which should be preferred in areas where there is a risk of insulation failure and arcing, poses serious risks especially in buildings with high human density such as factories. The products must also be used together with special connection components that have passed lightning tests. Original connections must definitely be evaluated during the design phase.

The application of lightning protection systems is at least as important as the selection of the cable. All insulation layers up to 28 mm thickness at the section entering the cable head must be cut with a special cutting machine. Stripping and installation apparatuses prevent damage to the insulation.

The special mounting components entering the lightning air terminal system must be tightened according to torque values and bonded.



Then, we must bond the special head with a thermal process. Afterwards, let the product cool down before installation.

You must absolutely ground the outer surface of the insulated conductor. Before installation, you can lay a strip on the rear surface of the cable or adapt grounding systems to the surface with special connection components. An insulated conductor without grounding on its outer surface has not been installed correctly.
