The turbines were repeatedly malfunctioning due to continuous sudden surges and lightning strikes.
Following the inspection and situation assessment, the following measures were recommended based on the system diagram.
Listing our analyses step by step:
1- In the Energy-Control panel inside the turbine, a B+C class device with a 25 ns response time was recommended.
2- At the transformer point, RES surge arresters operating at 440/690 volts and specially designed for phase protection were recommended against surges coming from the grid and grounding line.
One device must be used for each phase.
3- A sensitive 24 V D-class protection was applied bidirectionally for data lines.
4- To prevent rectifier card failures, a single-phase B+C class device was installed at the power point located immediately behind the card cover.
5- Coordinated B+C class products with 100 kA discharge capacity were used in the rectifiers.
6- Spark-gap damping and equipotential bonding devices were used in the turbine body connections and in the equipotential connections between the turbine, kiosk, fence, and transformer.
This device suppresses surges up to 100 kA wherever they occur along the turbine.
