Raycorr Lightning and AC-DC Voltage Protection System for Pipelines
17 January 2021Transformer systems are the energy backbone of every facility. Any failure occurring in a transformer will cause the entire system to be taken out of operation. Lightning strikes are one of the most common and risky reasons for transformers to go out of service. Especially in facilities such as wind power plants and solar power plants, transformers suffer serious damage due to lightning strikes. In this case, the low voltage points of transformers must definitely be protected with the correct protection products. It is physically impossible to install panel-type protectors at these points of transformers; therefore, more modern and effective systems must be used.

With the Raycap Rayvoss Transformer Lightning Protection System, surges can be detected within 1 nanosecond and suppressed an unlimited number of times. The Rayvoss transformer lightning protection system, created with Strikesorb technology, is currently the world’s most advanced and most effective lightning protection system. Rayvoss systems, which provide protection with a lightning impulse characteristic of 10/350 ms waveform at a peak value of 200 kA, a 10-year warranty, and a 20-year service life, have the most important advantage of being applied in-line to the system. Rayvoss systems with a protection level (Up) below 1 kV neutralize surges coming from the phase, earth, and neutral lines of transformers within 1 nanosecond. In addition to lightning strikes, the Rayvoss Transformer Protection System also provides protection against grid surges, sudden voltage fluctuations, switching surges, and harmonics, and must be present in every transformer. Today, we witness that some locally manufactured surge arresters are used in transformers for lightning protection purposes, yet transformers are damaged even by the smallest surges. The reason for this is generally that the installed products only have 8/20 or 4/10 grid surge test characteristics. Lightning impulse characteristics are completely different. The 10/350 waveform test is the lightning impulse test and is referred to as Iimpulse. Iimp and Imax values represent different protection parameters. A product with an Imax value of 100 kA does not mean it provides 100 kA lightning protection. For this reason, both Iimp and Imax values must be checked. Especially in high-altitude areas, it is inevitable to prefer products that provide lightning impulse protection up to 200 kA. The Rayvoss transformer lightning protection system, which provides protection against both lightning and grid surges, has a Type 1+2 classification.
