Protection Against Overvoltages from Ground Lines: DINFIL
When lightning and electromagnetic effects come to the agenda, energy lines usually come to the forefront. However, field experience and test results show that one of the most critical risks is high-frequency, induced overvoltages carried into the system through grounding lines.
At this point, a special technology that complements standard surge arrester (SPD) solutions comes into play: the DINFIL Ground Line Lightning Attenuation Filter.
What is DINFIL?
DINFIL (Model: DNNFT) is a high-reactance filter developed to suppress high-frequency, induced overvoltages coming through the grounding line.
- Does not block direct current and low-frequency currents.
- Attenuates high-frequency, lightning-induced impulses.
- Works together with standard SPDs; it does not replace the SPD, but complements the system.
How Does It Work?
The operating principle of DINFIL is based on the effect of self-inductance. When high-frequency currents attempt to pass through the filter, a counter electromotive force is generated on the ferrite core. This effect makes it difficult for the high-frequency component to pass and part of the energy is absorbed as heat.
Why Should DINFIL Be Used at High-Risk Points?
Standard SPDs are designed for impulses coming through energy and signal lines. However, voltages induced via the grounding plate or metal structure may bypass SPD protection in some cases.
DINFIL is positioned exactly to close this critical gap and provides an additional layer of protection to LV surge arrester solutions.
Technical Endurance and Standards
DINFIL has been tested according to the following standards:
- UNE EN IEC 62561-1
- UNE EN IEC 62305-1
- UNE EN IEC 61400-24
- 200 kA – 10/350 µs lightning impulse withstand capability
- Cumulative energy absorption over 30,000 kJ/Ω
- Continuous current carrying capacity up to 315 A
These values demonstrate that DINFIL offers strong performance not only theoretically but also under field conditions.
Where Is It Used?
DINFIL provides an effective solution especially in the following areas:
- Industrial facilities
- Telecommunication centers
- Power plants and wind turbines
- Historic buildings and critical infrastructures
- Maritime, offshore, and corrosive environments
In land and marine applications, it provides effective protection against induced impulses originating from the ground line.
Important Reminder
- DINFIL does not replace the SPD; it complements the SPD.
- The grounding connection of the SPD must be routed through DINFIL.
- Proper design and correct installation are the keys to system performance.
In today’s sensitive electronic systems, lightning protection is not a single-layer solution.
When SPD for the energy line and complementary solutions such as DINFIL for the ground line are evaluated together; systems become safer, longer-lasting, and more sustainable.
