Due to their open-area locations, golf courses are highly exposed to the direct effects of lightning. In addition to the possibility of damage to the golf facility\u2019s social buildings and electrical systems, there are also life-threatening risks for golfers, especially due to step voltage. Because of soil resistivity, a lightning strike occurring near the golf course or on a tree close to the golf course may cause electric shock to people playing golf due to differences in resistivity. Within the scope of IEC 62305 standards, protection zones must be established on golf courses using passive systems; precautions must be taken against step voltage, and all energy and communication infrastructure must be protected with low-voltage surge arrester systems.<\/p>\n

Lightning risk on golf courses affects human life as well as causes damage to all electrical systems. Especially lighting systems are of great importance for golf courses, and in many facilities, a lightning strike occurring at a distant point can disable the lighting system. In addition, security and camera systems are also damaged as a result of lightning discharge.<\/p>\n

Lighting systems, irrigation systems, security systems, and the electrical equipment of the clubhouse on golf courses must be protected against fire and transient overvoltage surge risks.<\/p>\n

Specifically for golf courses, first of all, a detailed risk analysis and site survey should be carried out within the scope of IEC 62305-2. After the survey, correct protection measures should be determined, engineering protection calculations should be made for the facility, and implementation should be carried out with the right products and an expert team.
