One of the important factors affecting power quality is harmonics. Harmonic current or voltage is the deviation from the pure sinusoidal waveform. The main causes of harmonics are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Power electronics devices (Static AC\/DC converters, rectifiers)<\/li>\n<li>Arc furnaces and electrolysis<\/li>\n<li>Electronic ballasts<\/li>\n<li>Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS)<\/li>\n<li>AC speed control devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4767\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4767\" style=\"width: 524px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yilkomer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/harmonik-nedir.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4767\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4767\" src=\"https:\/\/yilkomer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/harmonik-nedir.gif\" alt=\"Harmonics reduce power quality in facilities.\" width=\"524\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harmonics reduce power quality in facilities.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So what can harmonics cause in a facility?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Additional losses in electrical power systems<\/li>\n<li>Losses in power generation, transmission, and distribution<\/li>\n<li>Increased voltage drop<\/li>\n<li>Rise in ground short-circuit currents<\/li>\n<li>Malfunctions in PLC and automation systems<\/li>\n<li>Burnout of electronic boards<\/li>\n<li>Distortion of relay signals<\/li>\n<li>Overstressing of capacitors in compensation systems<\/li>\n<li>Incorrect tripping of protection systems<\/li>\n<li>Incorrect operation of microprocessors<\/li>\n<li>Additional noise and loading in motors<\/li>\n<li>Resonance at harmonic frequencies even if there is no resonance at fundamental frequency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>How Are Harmonics Measured?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Harmonic measurement<\/strong><\/span> must be performed regularly to ensure that each facility has quality electrical energy. Many power quality issues are caused by harmonics. According to international standards, harmonic distortion is limited to 3% for voltage and 5% for current. Most distribution systems in Turkey consist of single-phase and unbalanced loads. Therefore, the harmonic content of each primary phase is usually different. This makes it difficult to measure harmonics in three-phase systems because the imbalance level varies per phase. There are two different methods:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Measure each of the 3 phases separately. The potential issue here is how frequently the defined distortion limit is exceeded.<\/li>\n<li>Average distortion over 3 phases. Each phase measurement contributes to the overall average distortion. The disadvantage is that a high distortion in one phase may be masked by lower distortions in the other two phases. Monitoring of installed fixed devices.<\/li>\n<li>Responsibilities of the grid<\/li>\n<li>Prevent harmonic resonance<\/li>\n<li>Record newly connected loads to the system<\/li>\n<li>Analyze new loads
