\r\n The level of lightning protection a system requires is never determined\r\n by guesswork. Which building needs which level of protection is\r\n calculated through a risk assessment carried out under\r\n TS EN \/ IEC 62305-2<\/strong>. The tool on this page is a\r\n preliminary assessment aid, designed to give you a quick view of your\r\n building's risk profile.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n

Why Is a Risk Assessment Necessary?<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n Two neighbouring buildings, on the same street and of the same height,\r\n can still require entirely different levels of protection. One might\r\n have ten people working inside it, the other two hundred; one might\r\n hold standard office equipment, the other a control system that halts\r\n production the moment it stops. Risk has less to do with the building\r\n itself than with what's inside it<\/strong>.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n For this reason, the standard does not lay down a simple rule such as\r\n \"a building of this height needs this system.\" Instead, it produces a\r\n numerical risk value by jointly assessing the building's location,\r\n dimensions, materials, purpose, the density of people and equipment\r\n inside it, and the local lightning density. Where this value exceeds\r\n the threshold the standard considers acceptable, protective measures\r\n become mandatory.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n

Four Distinct Risks Are Assessed<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n TS EN \/ IEC 62305-2 addresses the loss lightning can cause under four\r\n headings. Not every heading needs to be calculated for every building;\r\n which risks apply depends on the nature of the building itself.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

Risk of Loss of Human Life<\/h3>\r\n

\r\n The risk of loss of life or permanent injury. This is assessed for\r\n every building and carries the lowest tolerance threshold of the\r\n four risks.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

\r\n R2<\/span>\r\n

Risk of Loss of Service<\/h3>\r\n

\r\n Interruption of a service provided to the public. Applies to\r\n infrastructure such as power distribution, telecommunications, and\r\n water supply.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Risk of Loss of Cultural Heritage<\/h3>\r\n

\r\n Loss of assets that cannot be replaced. Assessed for museums,\r\n historic buildings, and archives.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Risk of Economic Loss<\/h3>\r\n

What Goes Into the Calculation?<\/h2>\r\n

  • Fire load and explosion risk<\/strong> \u2014 The nature of the materials present on site<\/li>\r\n
  • Connected service lines<\/strong> \u2014 How power, telecom, and data lines enter the building<\/li>\r\n

    The Result: Lightning Protection Level (LPL)<\/h2>\r\n

    \r\n The output of the calculation is the Lightning Protection\r\n Level<\/strong> that must be applied to the building. The standard\r\n defines four levels; as the level rises, the air termination system\r\n becomes denser and protection becomes more comprehensive.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

    \r\n The placement of the air terminals is determined by these values. Under\r\n LPL I, any point a 20-metre sphere can touch on the building is treated\r\n as unprotected; under LPL IV, that radius extends to 60 metres. This\r\n difference directly affects how dense the air termination system needs\r\n to be.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n

    What This Tool Does \u2014 and Doesn't Do<\/h3>\r\n

    \r\n This calculator gives you a quick, preliminary picture<\/strong>\r\n of your building's risk profile and indicates which protection level is\r\n likely to apply. It does not, however, replace a formal risk\r\n assessment report.<\/strong>\r\n <\/p>\r\n
