A wind turbine, meanwhile, is the highest point on\r\n      its site \u2014 with a tower height exceeding a hundred metres, it all but\r\n      invites a strike. In both cases, the structure is not a building to be\r\n      protected but <strong>a machine that generates revenue<\/strong>.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n    <p>\r\n      What makes protection genuinely difficult on these sites is the DC\r\n      side. On the AC grid, current passes through zero every half-cycle, so\r\n      any arc that forms is naturally extinguished. <strong>DC has no such\r\n      zero crossing; the arc does not self-extinguish.<\/strong> For this\r\n      reason, a wrongly selected DC SPD can turn into a fire source rather\r\n      than a source of protection. This is a known cause of fires on solar\r\n      and wind sites.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n    <p>\r\n      Another challenge is that personnel are not continuously present on\r\n      site. If nobody sees an SPD's indicator turn red once it has reached\r\n      the end of its service life, the plant can keep generating unprotected\r\n      for months.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n    <div class=\"yke__kartlar\">\r\n      <div class=\"yke-kart\">\r\n        <h3 class=\"yke-kart__baslik\">Direct Loss of Revenue<\/h3>\r\n        <p class=\"yke-kart__metin\">\r\n          Every inverter that goes offline means energy that is neither\r\n          generated nor sold. Downtime translates directly into lost revenue.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n      <div class=\"yke-kart\">\r\n        <h3 class=\"yke-kart__baslik\">Fire Risk on the DC Side<\/h3>\r\n        <p class=\"yke-kart__metin\">\r\n          Because the arc does not self-extinguish in DC, an SPD with\r\n          inadequate disconnection behaviour is a serious hazard.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n      <div class=\"yke-kart\">\r\n        <h3 class=\"yke-kart__baslik\">High Exposure<\/h3>\r\n        <p class=\"yke-kart__metin\">\r\n          Open terrain, tall towers, and a large surface area \u2014 all three\r\n          raise the likelihood of a direct strike and of induction.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n      <div class=\"yke-kart\">\r\n        <h3 class=\"yke-kart__baslik\">Remote, Unstaffed Sites<\/h3>\r\n        <p class=\"yke-kart__metin\">\r\n          A fault can go unnoticed for days. A monitoring-free protection\r\n          system is, in practice, no protection at all.\r\n        <\/p>\r\n      <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n  <\/div>\r\n  <!-- PROTECTION LAYERS -->\r\n  <div class=\"yke__blok yke-rv\">\r\n    <h2 class=\"yke__baslik\">Where Is Protection Installed on Site?<\/h2>\r\n    <p>\r\n      On an energy plant, protection is built as an unbroken chain from the\r\n      panel to the grid connection point. Any missing link weakens the whole\r\n      chain.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n    <div class=\"yke-akordiyon\">\r\n      <div class=\"yke-ak\">\r\n        <button type=\"button\" class=\"yke-ak__bas\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\r\n          <span class=\"yke-ak__no\">01<\/span>\r\n          <span class=\"yke-ak__yazi\">String Combiner Boxes (DC Combining)<\/span>\r\n          <span class=\"yke-ak__ok\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span>\r\n        <\/button>\r\n        <div class=\"yke-ak__icerik\">\r\n          <div class=\"yke-ak__ic\">\r\n            <p>\r\n              The first point where the strings coming from the panels are\r\n              combined, and the most critical protection stage on the DC\r\n              side. Selection comes down to two questions: is there external\r\n              lightning protection on site (Type 1 \/ Type 2), and what is the\r\n              system voltage (1100 V \/ 1500 V DC)?\r\n            <\/p>\r\n            <p>\r\n              In boxes with many strings, the <strong>5Y<\/strong> models \u2014\r\n              which protect two or three strings with a single device instead\r\n              of a separate SPD per string \u2014 give a clear saving in panel\r\n              space and cabling. Data and measurement cables\r\n              running for kilometres can be even more exposed to induction\r\n              than the power lines themselves. String-monitoring cards,\r\n              weather stations, and metering lines all need their own,\r\n              separate protection.\r\n            <\/p>\r\n            <p>\r\n              Just as important is <strong>monitoring the status of the SPDs\r\n              themselves<\/strong>. Panel support structures, combiner boxes,\r\n              inverter plinths, and the substation must all be tied into one\r\n              common equipotential network. Otherwise a potential difference\r\n              builds up between points, and the protection devices cannot do\r\n              their job.\r\n            <\/p>\r\n            <p>\r\n              Soil resistivity varies from site to site, and even from point\r\n              to point within the same site.
