In buildings such as\r\n hospitals, shopping malls, hotels, offices, and schools, lightning\r\n protection is a matter of life safety<\/strong> before it is a\r\n matter of equipment protection.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n

Why Is Risk Calculated Differently in a Commercial Building?<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n TS EN \/ IEC 62305-2 addresses the loss lightning can cause under four\r\n headings. Of these, R1 \u2014 risk of loss of human life<\/strong> is\r\n the component with the lowest tolerance threshold in the standard. The\r\n more people a building holds, and the longer they stay there, the\r\n harder it becomes to reach the acceptable risk limit.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n A warehouse might employ thirty people; a shopping mall of the same\r\n size can hold tens of thousands over the course of a day. In a\r\n hospital, people are not only numerous but also difficult to\r\n evacuate<\/strong>. For this reason, two buildings of the same size can\r\n require entirely different protection levels depending on how they are\r\n used.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n The second difference is that the systems inside the building depend on\r\n one another. The fire detection panel, lift control, emergency\r\n lighting, and public address system all need to work at the same time.\r\n One of them going offline undermines the purpose of the rest.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n The number of occupants and the time they spend in the building are\r\n the most decisive inputs in the risk calculation. Crowded buildings\r\n have a low tolerance threshold.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Where Is Protection Installed in the Building?<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n In commercial buildings, protection is not achieved by fitting one\r\n device to one panel. A staged chain is built from the power intake down\r\n to the end-user device, while life safety and ELV (extra-low voltage)\r\n systems are addressed separately.\r\n <\/p>\r\n
