\r\n In defense facilities, a system going offline means more than lost\r\n production. Radar goes blind, communications drop, surveillance stops.\r\n In these facilities protection is part of mission\r\n continuity<\/strong>.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n

Why Is This a High-Risk Sector?<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n Defense industry facilities stand apart from other sectors for three\r\n distinct reasons when it comes to lightning. The first is\r\n exposure<\/strong>: radar towers, antennas, and communication\r\n masts are the highest points in their surroundings and are typically\r\n sited in open terrain, on elevated ground. Lightning seeks out the\r\n highest point.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n The second is content<\/strong>: munitions stores, explosives\r\n production lines, and fuel facilities fall into the structure class\r\n that requires the highest protection level under TS EN \/ IEC 62305.\r\n Here the acceptable risk threshold is far lower than for an ordinary\r\n industrial facility.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n The third is consequence<\/strong>: in a production facility, a\r\n failure means downtime; in a defense facility, a failure can mean loss\r\n of mission capability and threat to life. For this reason, design is\r\n driven not by the logic of \"adequate protection\" but of \"protection\r\n that admits no interruption.\"\r\n <\/p>\r\n

Mission Interruption<\/h3>\r\n

\r\n Loss of radar, communication, or surveillance systems means a\r\n direct loss of operational capability.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Explosion Risk<\/h3>\r\n

\r\n Spark formation is unacceptable in munitions and fuel facilities;\r\n the highest protection level is required.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

\r\n Towers, antennas, and open-terrain facilities are the structures\r\n most exposed to a direct lightning strike.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n

Sensitive Electronics<\/h3>\r\n

\r\n RF receivers, signal-processing cards, and encrypted communication\r\n equipment operate at low voltage-withstand thresholds.\r\n <\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n \r\n

Where Is Protection Installed on Site?<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n Protection on defense sites requires designing the whole compound, not\r\n a single building. Each building group carries a different risk, and\r\n therefore a different required protection level.\r\n <\/p>\r\n
