What Does Lightning Actually Hit in an Industrial Facility?<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n A modern production facility is far more sensitive than it was twenty\r\n years ago. Relay-based control panels have given way to PLCs,\r\n direct-on-line motors to drives, mechanical gauges to sensors and HMI\r\n screens. These devices make production more efficient \u2014 but their surge\r\n withstand is far lower than what they replaced.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n What causes the damage, moreover, is often not a direct strike on the\r\n facility itself. The voltage induced along long cable runs by a strike\r\n landing a few hundred metres away is more than enough to burn out a PLC\r\n input card. Industrial facilities have long cable routes \u2014 and the risk\r\n of induction rises with them.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

Where Is Protection Installed in a Facility?<\/h2>\r\n

\r\n Lightning protection is not installed at a single point \u2014 it is built up\r\n in stages. Each stage brings the residual voltage passing through from\r\n the previous one down to a level the next device can withstand.\r\n <\/p>\r\n
